Tonga ([ˈtoŋa]; Tongan: Puleʻanga Fakatuʻi ʻo Tonga), officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state and archipelago comprising 177 islands of which 52 islands are inhabited. The total surface area is about 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) scattered over 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) of the southern Pacific Ocean. It has a population 103,000 people of whom 70% reside on the main island of Tongatapu.
Tonga stretches over about 800 kilometres (500 mi) in a north-south line – about a third of the distance from New Zealand to Hawaii. It is surrounded by Fiji and Wallis and Futuna (France) to the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the east, Kermadec (part of New Zealand) to the southwest, and New Caledonia (France) and Vanuatu to the farther west.
Tonga became known as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan.
The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12–16 m (39–52 ft) and weigh about 36,000 kg (79,000 lb). The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is known for breaching and other distinctive surface behaviors, making it popular with whale watchers. Males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time. Its purpose is not clear, though it may have a role in mating.
Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 km (16,000 mi) each year. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter when they fast and live off their fat reserves. Their diet consists mostly of krill and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the bubble net technique.
Like other large whales, the humpback was a target for the whaling industry. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, its population fell by an estimated 90% before a 1966 moratorium. While stocks have partially recovered, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships, and noise pollution continue to impact the population of 80,000.

Diving in Ha'apai is some of the best worldwide. In this video you will find the summary of a few days diving at the Matafonua dive base on Foa island. Many thanks to Nina and Darren for their hospitality. This video was shot in March 2015. No humpack whales (they come in the winter) but, surprisingly, false killer whales.
Spearfishing and freediving around Eua, an island in the south of the Kingdom of Tonga. Came across plenty of Wahoo, doggies (all sharked unfortunately) and some rewarding reef species. www.offtrailtravel.com. Located off the coast of the island of Eua, in the South Pacific kingdom of Tonga, Cathedral Cave is an amazing dive. Unlike most caves, this one is huge; a wide-open structure with openings in the ceiling that allow brilliant shafts of light to penetrate into the cavern. My first time with dive video, and didn't have the camera light positioned quite right to avoid some backscatter reflection. Still, the video gives you a pretty good idea what it's like to be inside this magnificent place. Video taken with a GoPro Hero 3+ with a Sidekick dive light.

Tonga is a magnificently beautiful country. The Kingdom is a constitutional Monarchy, modeled after England and uses English law as its base. Located in the grand South Pacific, Tonga is between Tahiti and Fiji, an independent island nation in the southern Pacific Ocean, located approximately 650 km (approximately 400 mi) southeast of Fiji and approximately 1,850 km (approximately 1,150 mi) northeast of New Zealand. Tonga is the only remaining Polynesian monarchy. The Vava’u Island Group. This Cluster of islands, North of the Ha’apai Group, is the most spectacular in Tonga. Part 5 of my South Pacific Trip. After a night in an airport hotel in Fiji, I jet off to the Kingdom of Tonga. The capital, Nuku'alofa is a sleepy town with a fair smattering of palm trees, foraging pigs and piglets and plenty of (friendly) stray dogs. There's also some big fruit bats. My full day in Tonga happened to be a Sunday, a day where everything closes except for the churches. So I visit one and listen to some singing before catching a ferry over to Pangaimotu Island.

From the http://www.VideoSource.com Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, "Islands of the South Pacific". Stock footage available from http://videosource.com/search.html Transcript: One of the most universally recognized images of the South Pacific is the coconut palm. It's an excellent colonizer, capable of surviving long periods of time floating along until chance might have it bump into a patch of warm soil on which to root. The coconut is an indispensable ingredient in Polynesian life. Its milk provides a nourishing beverage. It is also dried into Copra for use in cooking oil and body oil. The coconuts are even used by children as flotation devices! But, most of all, it is the basis for almost every traditional dish in the Polynesian diet. Basic staple di...
